John Hughlings Jackson1835–1911
Jackson was a founder editor of Brain, the first issue of which is shown on the left. His name is associated with epilepsy, and an article by him on the condition partially conceals his portrait on the right. Jacksonian seizures start from a specific focus and spread to other muscles on the same side, and they are localized to lesions on the contralateral hemisphere. Similar seizures were described earlier in the century by Louis François Bravais (1801-1843) although their cerebral significance was not appreciated; the condition is sometimes referred to as Bravais-Jackson epilepsy.
